George
Averoff, the great benefactor of Greece and the first Olympic Games:
The money to carry out the costly task of re-marbling the Panathenian Stadium was put up by this great man, much in the manner of an ancient
'choregos'.

Olympics soccer stadium due for completion in July 2004:
Demolition of the decrepit Karaiskaki Stadium is to begin on April 7,
2003 to make way for the new facility that will meet Olympics specifications, the
Athens 2004 Organising Committee for the Olympic Games SA (ATHOC) told a news
conference on March 15, 2003. The new stadium, which is to host at least 11 games in the Olympics, will have a seating capacity of 32,000.
In addition, a delegation of the FIFA soccer association said at the end of a visit to Greece on
March 15, 2003 that it was satisfied with progress towards the games, although deadlines needed to be met as time was short.

Karaiskaki Stadium will be the venue of the final in the 2004 Olympic football
tournament:
The Karaiskaki Stadium in the Neo Faliron district will be the venue of the final in the 2004 Olympic
soccer tournament. The Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC), which owns the stadium, finally came to a new agreement with Olympiakos
so the upgrading of Karaiskaki will finally commence [in April 2003]. This ends more than a year’s of speculation as to future of the Piraeus club historic home. According to a
HOC announcement, Karaiskaki will be ready by 2004 and will be leased until 2027 to the building consortium (Olympiakos 49%,
Alte Construction Company SA 49%, Agiostratitis-architect 2%). Karaiskaki will host the football final
-- and probably some more matches -- throughout the Athens 2004 Olympics, as announced by the IOC vice-president Mr. Denis Oswald. [January

Economies of scale are adding tremendous potential to the construction sector in Greece:
Buildings erected by Greek companies can be seen all over the world, from the Middle East and the Balkans to Pakistan and the Far East. Each country has influenced the way in which Greek contracting firms operate, but the biggest influence of all behind the construction boom has been the choice of Athens for the 2004 Olympics.
